I want to help you unlock your inner creativity. I have been playing in and leading bands since 2010 and have learned many lessons along the way. I have always had a passion for the guitar. Even before I began playing, I would sit at my computer and create the guitars of my dreams and watch legendary performances from the greats. Now, I want to share the same love of music with you! Music is powerful and can move and shake us to the very core of who we are. My hope is for all of my students to develop a passion for music and creativity that will help shape the world.
I began teaching guitar while working a residency program in Maryland. I began teaching private lessons 7 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students out of my studio space in Johnson City for the past 2 years. I have taught students from ages 9 to 60 and have loved every minute of it. My students have ranged from pure beginners to advanced/intermediate students just looking to freshen up their skills. I always try to make my lessons fun and challenging for each student. I aspire to make each lesson a memorable experience that gets my student one step closer to reaching their creative/musical goals.
The first question I will as a new student is "Why are you wanting to learn this instrument?" The answers vary from "I just want to play in a band" to "I would like to know more about music theory." Once we dive into why the student is interested in learning their instrument, I begin tailoring each lesson to his or her desired outcome. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for my students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I always make myself available to students to reach out with questions as well.
I live for the "AHA!" moments from my students. There comes a point in every students musical journey where it all snaps together like a puzzle and a new piece of the picture can be seen. "AHA" moments are big deals, and we celebrate them together. Once a student has completed one skill, technique, scale, etc... we move ahead at his or her own pace. Once my student has progressed we begin a steady diet of repetition and exercises designed to help them maintain the knowledge acquired as well as new skills to take them to the next level. We will always be working to find the next piece of the puzzle. The next "AHA" is just around the corner.
