Overview:
I'm a passionate music educator with considerable experience as a teacher and performer. I graduated from the University of Arkansas in 2005 where I studied music education with an emphasis on trombone. Since graduation, I have been fortunate to have many opportunities to conduct, perform, and teach music. I play a many different instruments and perform many different genres and styles. Whether it be conducting student ensembles, performing in small clubs, or singing with a chorus at Carnegie Hall, many of my best life experiences have been because of music and I want to guide my students toward their own great musical experiences.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching in high school, working with elementary and middle school students. Through this experience, I discovered my passion for helping others discover music. In my first full-time teaching position, I was able to to lead the Greenland (AR) High School band to the ASBOA Sweepstakes Award, the highest honor for a school band in that state. Additionally, many of my students were selected to honor bands and several received college scholarships. Since then, I founded the Festival Chorus at Dove Science Academy in Tulsa, OK, directed the Chancel Choir at First United Methodist Church of Tacoma. More recently, I was the director at Franklin High School in Seattle where I worked together with parents and students to double enrollment in band and quadruple enrollment in orchestra.
METHODS USED

For beginning students, I strive to teach the basics of music theory while learning the fundamentals of producing characteristic tone on their instrument.  I typically start by working through the Essential Elements method book and introduce solos, ensembles, and orchestral excerps when appropriate.  If the student is a part of a school or community ensemble, I work with the student on any pieces that their ensemble is preparing for performance. For more experienced students (especially adults), I tailor my instruction toward their individual goals, including genre specific techniques.

LESSON STYLE
The dedication it takes to learn an instrument can help develop skills values that will benefit the student throughout life, regardless of profession. Therefore, I believe that the process of learning music is more important than any particular performance that we work toward, so I take a pragmatic approach to instruction. Of course, we look forward to recitals and concerts, because they give our rehearsals direction, but it should also be emphasized that our most rewarding musical experiences may happen in lessons or private practice. Keeping this in mind, I strive to recognize all progress, no matter how small and all criticism must be constructive and be conveyed positively.
