2.5 years University of Memphis Music Education Degree Marched Snare Drum for Drum Corp International - Memphis Sound
I began my musical journey in middle school where I found a passion for percussion! I practiced and practiced and tried to be in as many emsembles as I could. I performed in my first Christmas parade and after seeing my sister's high school drumline I knew one day I would be a part of that. I joined the jazz band and started taking lessons for drum set. During middle school I competed in Solo and Ensemble and All-County and All-State. Once I was in high school I performed with the majority of our groups including; symphonic band, concert band, jazz band, marching band drumline, and our indoor percussion drumline and my senior year I was section leader for our drumline and concert groups. During my high school career I performed in many WGI contest and finals with our indoor percussion. After high school I marched a season with the DCI group, Memphis Sound where I traveled the east coast for three months performing and practicing. I then marched for three years in the University of Memphis Mighty Sound of the South marching band.Percussion is my passion and has been for the majority of my life, and I hope I can instill that passion into all of my students.
I started teaching right after high school, helping at band camps and during the season. I started giving lessons soon after and in 2007 I was offered the oppurtunity to be the drumline instructor for a local high school. I would teach there until 2012. I wrote exercises, cadences, their show music, and taught them all the fundementals of marching and proper playing technique. Every year we would also perform an indoor show which I wrote both the music and drill. I also gave lessons to students after practices, ranging from first time percussionist to seniors needing help with college audtions. My experience with both teaching a large group and a single student has given me new ways of teaching and the knowledge how to best teach each student so that they are not just learning a skill, but also having fun.
Percussion is a wide genre and has multiple instruments to master and wether you are looking to better jam out with your band on your drum kit, looking to perfect your five stroke roll, learn how to keep the beat on the congos, or to make the snare line for your marching band, I can help you reach that goal. So wether you are a first time percussionist or already at expert level, I have the lesson plan for you. Not only will we use the books that everyone plays out of, we can together create origional exercises and solos to help you perfect that rudiment or show your skills.
My goal is to have all of my students not only look forward to practicing but enjoy every second that they are behind their instrument. We will work to set achievable goals and work at a pace that will always be encouraging. Bringing passion to what they do will always be at the forfront of my teaching, if they are not enjoying what they are doing, passion will never develop.
