BA, Stony Brook University, Music // AA, Suffolk County Community College, Music
Overview:
I have been playing guitar for approximately 15 years. Over those years I have played many different styles, playing different instruments in different bands, from open mics to big venues all over the country. I love playing music and love helping others discover their love as well. One note worthy teaching gig I’ve had was working for a company in Nassau County, NY teaching guitar and music theory to developmentally challanged adults in a day program. There is no musician I will turn away; my focus is guitar, but I have many instruments and can introduce the basics for many such as drums, violin, viola, cello, piano, bass guitar, as well as composition and arrangment. I have worked with many bands, ensembles, and chamber groups, and would love the opportunity to help you achieve your musical goals. Whatever your musical interests, I'll help you get to where you want to go.
EXPERIENCE
I have played in venues from small coffee houses to The Paramount in Huntington, NY. I have played in many groups and ensembles as a premier performer and, of course, as part of the "tutti". I have studied under Micheal Bellajonas at Suffolk County Community College and Jerry Willard at Stony Brook University in my classical guitar studies. I maintain a violin/guitar duet with my wife, who is on her way to becoming a music educator. I've taught all different types of students and am very open and patient to everyone's needs.
METHODS USED
I strongly believe that everyone is very different. Learning styles and musical goals are very much a part of this. Some find reading from a book helps them, so for most students I begin by recommending "A Modern Method For Guitar" from the Berklee Press, however for others a book is not as helpful as listening to some music and watching someone play. I like to introduce as much theory as is desired from the student because theory is a very important part of the musical process, but if the student prefers to get playing first and understand the “why” later then we can work something out in that regard. Depending on musical interest, we can work with different genre's and pieces to promote specific techniques and practice routines. One of the most important things is to enjoy the process. Twisting an arm to practice or study is not going to facilitate a constructive learning environment.
LESSON STYLE
Every lesson is wrapped up with an obtainable goal for the next week. This will entirely depend on the student's level and individual goals for the instrument. Everyone has the end product in mind when it comes to learning an instrument. When someone picks up a Guitar, the learning process is not the first thing they think of: they think of the stage and sounding like their heroes. I'm here to remind all my students that there should never be an end; music is a never ending journey! It's good to imagine the ultimate goal and those bright stage lights, but one must walk before they can run. "In the eyes of those who anxiously seek perfection, a work is never truly completed, but abandoned" - Paul Valéry
