Merit Scholarship, New England Conservatory, 2005 - 2007
Overview:
I graduated from New England Conservatory in 2007 with a bachelors degree in jazz guitar. I have toured all over the world in numerous projects, including Joan As Police Woman, RubbIebucket, Landlady, and Eleanor Friedberger. have been teaching for twenty years to all levels of students. One of my highlights was being a guest artist at the Afghanistan Institute of Music, where I performed and taught group lessons to children in Kabul, Afghanistan. Also in 2017 I went to New Dehli, India to teach and perform.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to my high school days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 20 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio and students homes for the last 10 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. If a student isn't having fun in their lessons, then I'm not doing my job! My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. I'm always looking to bring on new students of all ages!
METHODS USED
For beginning students who are children, I typically start with basic melodies that are singable and easily recognized. From there we are able to introduce basic theory knowledge. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level.
LESSON STYLE
One of my main goals in teaching is to inspire my students, to make them excited about music. I find that the best way to do this is to work on playing music that the student wants to play. That said, there should be a basic interest present. I expect each of my students to have an idea of why they want to play music. Ideally each student should be listening to music and know what he/she likes or dislikes. Developing the ear is also very important to me. Part of the lessons are spent listening to music and figuring it out by ear.
