Growing up my teachers always created an environment where the students can be creative and inspired. They nurtured us and helped mold us into to who we are today. As time went by I wanted to pass down what they instilled in me and be apart of the wave of teachers. I first began teaching at Neighborhood Music School's Summer Jazz Camp 8 years ago. My drum teacher selected me and other students to be mentors for the younger musicians. We had to lead rehearsals, help kids with their parts and teach masterclasses. It was a very rewarding experience and something I looked forward to every summer. As time went on I began teaching at Neighborhood as a private instructor until I left to teach in Shanghai, China.
For materials I use the following; Vic Firth Snare Drum Method, Rudimental Swing Solos, Art of Bop Drumming, Brazilian Rhythms for Drumset, Afro-Cuban Rhythms for Drumset, Syncopation, Rudimental Ritual, Tables of Time and Music Minus One. Each book focuses on sight reading, coordination and musical styles. Outside of reading materials, I always give my students music to listen to and recordings to play along to. Playing and listening to recordings provides a musical context for what we're learning.
As a educator and musician, I bring a lot passion and fun to everything I do. Knowing my students goals and helping them reach their goals are a top priority. As the great Muhammad Ali once said, “If my mind can conceive it, and my heart can believe it - then I can achieve it.” Those words are something I instill in all my students. I believe in my students and, whether it's music related or not, I encourage them to be they best can be. Pacing of classes depends on the students style of learning, how prepared they are and how seasoned they are.
