I've been playing drums and percussion professionally for about 20 years. I've taught private lessons; I've instructed high school drum lines and percussion ensembles. Being an Army musician, I've had the opportunity to play for soldiers and civilians in the US and abroad. Currently I play drums for the band As You Were, which is the Army's musical outreach team. The band does require that I spend some time on the road, but as a drummer I can teach lessons remotely from a hotel room. If you have a pad and sticks, you can learn the basics.
I started playing professionally in 10th grade. My first gig was a theatre gig, which was the musical, Anything Goes. During high school I picked up more theatre gigs, including annual church pageants. I marched two years in Drum Corps International with the Kiwanis Kavaliers while I was beginning my degree in Music Education. During my time in school I taught three drum lines and brought several successful percussion ensembles to contest. The Army has allowed me to use my teaching skills in various outreach efforts in our public schools.
I taylor my methods to the student. I will push the basics very hard. Then I will guide you in the direction you want to go. I also firmly believe that once it is apparent that there's nothing else I can teach you, I will recommend you study from a more advanced instructor. For example, if you come to me wanting to be a country drummer, I will still insist you get yourself a pair of sticks and a practice pad so I can make sure your basics are strong. As far as books: Charlie Wilcoxon's All American Solos; and Ted Reed's Syncopation.
The student must be motivated to practice. I'm just a guide making sure the student is on a path to success. It doesn't have to be MY path to success. It just has to be a path that demonstrates great playing. If you're more disciplined about your playing than I am, you will enjoy your lessons. But if you neglect your instrument and come to lessons unprepared, this will not be worth your time and money. I love teaching when there is synergy. If I push you to practice, push me back by playing and preparing the best you can.
