Hello! I was originally trained as a classical cellist, but I fell in love with the ukulele when I was in high school. In college at Loyola Maryland, I was the president and founder of the ukulele club which was featured on the Today Show with Al Roker in 2017. I perform with my ukulele when I can at coffee houses and events. I sang in choirs and a-cappella during college but when I sing or perform alone I always use my uke. I love to write and learn new songs whenever I can. I love teaching new students and I am happy to take students of all ages!
I started teaching in college when I started the ukulele club. I taught group classes once a week for up to 40 students as well as some private lessons. The ukulele is an easy instrument to learn even with no prior musical experience and can be learned at any age. It is a small yet versatile instrument that can be transported easily and won't break the bank to buy. I have a ukulele in every room and I always take one with me when I travel. The uke is a great instrument for sing-alongs by a campfire, songwriting, and jamming with friends!
With a beginner student, I start with the basics. We learn how to properly hold the instrument and how to tune the strings. From there, the students will learn the fundamentals of finger placement and basic strumming. Once the student feels comfortable, we start to learn different chords and scales. At this point, students will begin learning songs with basic chords. Once we get past this stage the lessons become more tailored to the individual student and we begin to learn and play music that the student is interested in.
The most important part is to have fun and love what you are doing. I want my students to develop a passion for music and really be motivated to learn. I want lessons and practice time to be something to look forward to and enjoy. I cater my teaching style to each individual student and make sure that they are having a positive and enriching experience. I have a positive and patient attitude and I always teach each student at their own pace. I will make sure that the student's voice is heard and adjust to whatever makes them most comfortable.
