BA, Lebanon Valley College, Music Business
I am a passionate instructor looking to teach my knowledge of trombone to any and all students. In May, 2018 I graduated from Lebanon Valley College with a BA in Music Business. For four years I took lessons with James Erdman, retired Marine Band first chair trombone, and performed in over 4 ensembles every semester. I had one solo recital and three recitals where I performed in between other recitalists. I love music and sharing the joy that it gives me and so many other people. I may be a beginner instructor but I look forward to every lesson I will have.
My teaching experience is very fresh as I only have tutored freshmen in beginner trombone and music theory. I believe if I can teach college music majors trombone I can teach just about anybody. My personal trombone experience is that in high school I studied jazz and learned jazz trombone methods. However, in college I studied mostly classical playing and that would be strongest curriculum. I've also studied piano and found that accompanying a student or at least learning the theory of a song can go a long way in a lesson. I look forward to sharing all my knowledge to my students.
For beginner and novice students I start with discovering where they at playing wise and knowing their instrument. Repertoire wise I believe simple Arban studies and nursery rhymes are all a beginner needs to know to improve their skills. As a student becomes more skilled either Rochut studies or Tyrell's 40 Progressive Studies can really help a student tune their skills. For fundamentals, I believe air control, phrasing, and legato playing to be critical to improve. Endurance and range can only be learned through repetitive playing and learning from yourself.
Seeing that "Eureka" moment in a student's eyes is one of the best experiences in the world. It is my goal to have that moment with all my students and have them consistently improving each lesson. I will do this by setting realistic goals and giving them positive encouragement along the way. If they are struggling, I will work with them every step of the way to ensure they learn correctly and have a good foundation for future learning. Personally, I learn best when I enjoy what is being taught so of course I will find out what a student enjoys and try to teach them accordingly.
