BA, Cals State Long Beach, Instrumental Music AA Cerritos College, Music
I am a passionate and disciplined instructor that believes that students should enjoy music at all times. In 2010, I graduated from Cal State Long Beach with a Bachelor in Instrumental Music. One of the experiences that I always enjoy in music is performing. I am a Los Angeles based musician that has worked with different groups, styles and artist. Another skill that I have acquire during the course of my career is the ability to arrange and write music. I have been part of a few short film projects that were featured in a couple of film festivals. I also can teach in Spanish.
My musical experience began back when I was 11 years old. I was introduced to music when I was a boy and from that point on my life changed. Through the course of my career I have played many genres of music such as Classical, Jazz, Latin, Pop, Rock, Blues, and Commercial Music. I graduated from the University Cal State Long Beach back in 2009 with and emphasis in instrumental music. During my college years I studied classical string bass and performed in different instrumental and vocal jazz ensembles. My primary instrument is the bass but I also play piano and guitar. I have been a musician for twenty five years and a teacher for ten years. In the last three years I have been working as a music teacher in Los Angeles Unified District.
For beginning students who are children, I usually start with technique exercises that will help develop the foundation of their playing. I do not introduce music notation usually until the fifth or sixth lesson. I believe that kids learn faster when they beginning learning by call and response or like many call imitation. By developing first the ability to listen and play by instinct a student can develop a stronger foundation in developing the beat and noticing high and low pitches. In my perspective music notation needs to be introduce later in the musical experience of a child.
My teaching philosophy is pretty simple and I describe it with these three words clear, direct, and creative. I believe that when it comes to teaching a teacher must be creative, since not all students learn the same way. Also a teacher must be simple and direct in his teachings. A lot of the times teachers tend to give too much information that goes over the head of the students. Whenever I sit with a new student I study the way he or she behaves when we do music. The reason for this is because I believe that a teacher must customize a lesson according to needs of the student.
