Overview:
I received my Bachelor's in Jazz Studies from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2006. Since then I performed with Who's Bad: The Ultimate Michael Jackson Tribute Band, and my own hip-hop/soul band The Urban Sophisticates. I've worked with Ellis Marsalis, Talib Kweli, Arrested Development, Byron Stripling, Fred Wesley, Delfeayo Marsalis, Wallace Roney, Jimmy Cobb, and Robin Eubanks.
I have performed on four continents, and on cruise ships world wide with numerous different ensembles. I fell in love with New Orleans, and have been studying New Orleans music for over a year now.
EXPERIENCE
I have taught trombone to all levels for over ten years. I worked with students in North Carolina and Chicago, and have taught trombone and music theory I like to give listening assignments as well, as it has been shown that students develop better technique when the music they practice what they are listening to. It also develops a historical understanding of the instrument, music, and musicians. My real world experience ranging from orchestras to dive bars. I have seen it all, done it all, and would be ready for any questions students may have.
METHODS USED
The Arban book is available for free on PDF. For beginning students, I discuss long tones, sound, and simple scale studies. Once students grasp the fundamentals, I like to teach how they relates to the music they listen to. Through this, students can learn how theory and scales become music As we get advanced, I like to move in to scale studies, technical warm ups, and theory. When working on a recital performance, or simply learning the instrument, I like to concentrate on listening, developing a clean and full sound, breathing, and musicality. For adults, I like to concentrate on building strong tone and range, and adjust based on their interest.
LESSON STYLE
I always start with a warm up, followed by scale studies. From there we move to etudes, and solos or concerti, and end with excerpts from books like the Mueller technical study or Arban book. For more advanced students and jazz players, I like to start with a warm up, scale study, learn tunes and the blues, big band charts, and end with listening and transcriptions. Overall, the most important thing a student can develop is a full tone and personal sound. When learning new styles or pieces, tone is always the first thing to go. By developing this and making it a priority, it gives students a leg up on any challenge that comes their way.
