The orchestra now member current
Graduated from eastman school of music with Masters of music performance and literature with Steven Doane and undergrad bachelors of cello performance with Tanya Remenikova. I am currently a third year principal cellist at The Orchestra Now in residence at Bard College in Annadale on Hudson NY. I’ve played with the minneapolis sinfonietta and associate with Chicago civic. Currently perform with TON in the city at Carnegie hall, jazz at Lincoln Center, the MET museum, and symphony space in Manhattan. Also contracted freelancer with Blue water kings band, silver arrow band, divina artisti, and listesso.
I started teaching in minneapolis Schmitt music through my undergrad with total beginners for 3 years which taught me a lot and then more during masters. Taught all ages at eastman community school when studying at Eastman and was a Studio teaching assistant for Steven Doane’s studio and taught first years undergrad students in group technique classes and one on one repertoire lessons. Faculty eastman community music school teacher for two years and taught group lessons and one on one of mostly adult players and some university of Rochester science students that wanted to keep going with music as a hobby. I also have experience teaching students with hearing aids and those with English as secondary language.
I usually start with an etude but I have experience with the level system with eastman community school of music and can start a plan based on the needs of the individual. I usually use Hal Leonard’s Essential Elements for total beginners but have experience with other schools of teaching such as Suzuki. For adult students, I usually start with fundamentals and then touch up on anything that needs improvement based on weekly assessments that are filled out by the student. I feel like assessments are a great way to communicate the needs of a student after each lesson so that I can plan the next lesson and gives the student a chance to express their needs and interests.
I enjoy using a lot of body awareness cues to make music making comfortable for all. I have experiences with both feldenchrist and Alexander technique to approach cello in a holistic way that allows the music to flow naturally without physical boundaries. Physical gestures must match musical ideas but are usually the first thing that is overlooked when trying to approach a musical idea. My undergrad was mostly musical ideas coming from my Russian teacher. My graduate time was spent trying to approach cello in a healthy ergonomic way. Steve Doane teaches at your body in your strad which taught me the importance of comfort in order to best express music.
