BA, Wesleyan University, High Honors in Music Performance and Composition
Awards:
2014 - Category 20 NATS Southern Regional Opera Singing Competition
Overview:
A lifelong musician and lover of teaching, I've been a student of music since I was a toddler on the Violin. Growing up in a musical household I was introduced to a variety of musical styles. In 2009, I graduated from Wesleyan University with Honors in Music Performance and Composition thanks to my first rock opera, Black Friday. After graduation I moved to New Orleans thanks to a post-Katrina service trip that introduced me to my new home. Besides being a 5 year member of the New Orleans Opera Chorus I also play lead guitar for local band The Tumbling Wheels.
EXPERIENCE
I've been working with students since I was in high school (I'm now 30) and enjoy teaching all styles, levels and disciplines. I specialize in many forms of Jazz, Swing and Bebop with a vast knowledge of Blues, Rock, Punk, and Popular Songs besides my classical singing repertoire. My teaching style fits the student and will change depending on your wants and needs. Warm ups and exercises are always encouraged as well as memorization and daily practice. I'm always looking for to share the joy of music with new students.
METHODS USED
For beginning children students I typically start with Hal Leonard or a similar reputable music book. Once the students has a grasp of the fundamentals we will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate to their age and skill level. For adult students, I find out what the student is interested in and create a lesson plan that is fun and challenging no matter their skill level. I studied the Suzuki method as a youngster so I understand the importance of ear training and sight reading. If your interests lean more towards songwriting and composition I have the knowledge to get you going.
LESSON STYLE
My goal is to inspire and invigorate my students with the gift of music. Scales and fingering/vocal exercises can become boring and tiresome especially for new and younger students. I find ways to make these more mundane parts of the lesson fun with games and veiled learning that keep students engaged. Together we'll set realistic goals at each lesson and make sure we acknowledge at the end of the lesson how we've progressed and what we need to work on. By the end of the lesson my students leave feeling confident in their abilities and eager to practice for next week's lesson.
