Overview:
I picked up my Aunt's clarinet at 3 years of age -- and never put it back again. 27 years later, I continue to play in many different community bands and orchestras.
The only thing I love more than playing music is teaching it. I have taught music in both charter schools and private lessons for the last 10 years and have a patient approach with my students. I believe that music should be fun and go out of my way to help my students find the fun in the lessons we are learning while customizing the lessons to them and their learning style.
I look forward to learning more about you and working withyou in the future!
EXPERIENCE
I first started teaching private lessons in 2001 while in High school. As section leader in my band, I went to the local middle school to help their clarinet players learn and improve on a 1 on 1 basis. Although I did not choose to persue music as my full time career, it is my full time hobby. Since high school, I have continued to give private lessons. I taught music at a private school for 2 years for grades K - 9. I have served on the board of two different local community bands. I continue to play in a community band and also volunteer my time to play on local shows for the communty theaters. Teaching music is all about the student and sharing the passion and skills that only music can provide with the student. I love teaching students of all ages and helping them to uncover their potential while learning not only how to play clarinet but also the fundamentals of music and music theory. By listening and learning my students, I am able to customize a plan that not only keeps them engaged but makes learning the methods and techniques fun. My goal is for every student to develop the skills and methods to allow them to thrive in their musical performance.
METHODS USED
My method is altered depending on the student's age, skill level, and ultimate goals. For beginners, we start with the fundamentals of playing and caring for the instrument as well as the basic of reading music. As the student starts to get a firm grasp on the fundaments, we will begin moving towards the goals of the student. Those goals differ from student to student. It may be to be able to play in a community band, earn a first chair seat in your schools band, build a strong audition portfolio, or even just to be able to perfect a favorite song. The biggest thing is that the student is continuing to advance and continuing to have fun!
LESSON STYLE
The ultimate goal is always to have a student who is moving forward, reaching realistic goals, and developing a passion for music. I set goals for the next lesson, the end of the quarter, and long term for my students. These goals are set with the student as well so we are moving together as a team towards their next step. I have found that by setting reasonable expectations, setting milestones in which to reach, and by letting the student know ways to measure reaching those mile stones we are able to tailor the instructions to the wants and needs of that student. I also believe in celebrating the victories and acknowledginig accomplishments. It continues to make the student eager to learn and reminds them that I truly care about them as a student.
