Overview:
To say that I am passionate would be understating how I feel about music. I like to think of music as an extension of myself -- as one of the ways that I look to express myself and connect with people. Because of how I feel about music, I like to make it as fun as possible all the time -- whether I'm teaching a student or practicing something new for myself, I always try to bring out the joy in everything I do. I recently just graduated from the Musicians Institute with a Certificate in Guitar Performance. It has done me wonders spending an entire year surrounded by all types of musicians. I feel like it broadened my horizon and unlocked numerous ways for me to analyze and compose music.
EXPERIENCE
I found my calling as a teacher two years ago, back in Dubai, when I was asked to help a friend's sister with a learning disability to play the guitar. My proudest achievement came when, during one of our lessons, she started playing the chords to Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and sang along beautifully. After that, I was hooked. I started putting up ads in the street and, in no time, I was getting dozens of calls a day. I've been tutoring privately ever since and I found that I have a knack for highlighting just what makes music fun for the students.
METHODS USED
I cater my teaching curriculums to the student's interest and proficiency level. The first lesson would involve a discussion about what initially drew the student to the guitar, what genres they love, and what they hope to get out of the class. Next, we will go through the fundamentals, as appropriate for the student's skill level. After we've established a clear vision and certain rhythm of doing things, I would assign 15-20mins of warm-ups for each lesson -- tailoring the warmup exercises to specific techniques that the student wants to improve in. The rest of the lesson would consist of learning a specific song or building the student's vocabulary on the instrument.
LESSON STYLE
As mentioned before, I learned that I have an affinity to make the music fun. It's never just work with me. I believe that a musician has done his/her job not when he/she can channel the energy of the music onto the listener. I love watching a student's face light up when they are able to play a lick or a statement that they never thought they would be able to play, or when I see the proverbial lightbulb going on atop their heads. For me, that trumps being able to shred or play unbelievably fast.
