Passionate about music and guitar from an early age, I first starting playing guitar when I was 13 and my older brother bought a Squire Strat. This is the Toyota Corolla of guitars. I then proceeded to play better than he did. Eventually, he stopped playing because I was better. Then I moved on to an Epiphone Les Paul. During this time, I was an extremely shy and self-conscious teenager and would not let anyone listen to my music. My older brothers forced me to let other people listen, and eventually I started coming out my shell and played in Worship for a few practice sessions. Then came college came and I was studying to get a high-paying corporate job. I didn’t have time for music. I kept listening to music but stopped creating it for 2 years.
The internet and social media have been my main platforms for music. Also at holiday events and weddings. In Boston, I played lead guitar in a corporate cover band. Imagine being on the 50th floor of the Prudential Tower in Boston and having a secret closet of instruments! We had keys, bass, 3 guitars, and a drum set. We called ourselves ”The Consultones” because we worked in actuarial consulting. We played classic rock and pop hits for corporate events. At a wedding I played alongside a cello and violin. Accompanying classical music pieces.
Every lesson begins with play! Learning is easiest when fun. My lesson plans typically follow helping the student develop a practice routine. This is customized to their needs. Then I help evaluate their progress -- perhaps they are learning a new song. Listening to what the student plays is important! We play together as if their are melodies. Much of my teaching is mental coaching to boost confidence so that the student can focus on the emotion and feel of the music. Find a comfortable posture and a place to study.
The lesson concludes with an assignment. What will they focus on until next time. My students do exceptionally well! I give them a few items or techniques to practice. This could be tempo, theory, or a new piece of music to learn. Every session has a period of learning new music and practicing old music. My style of teaching is performance oriented to help the student to play the music that they desire to be able to play. We practice in the same environment and posture as the rehearsal will be.
