I am the owner of my own studio where I record music for my studio band Robbie's Boys. I love music so at a young age I started learning acoustic guitar, electric guitar and bass guitar. My town is full of very talented musicians and music shops. I use to teach in person lessons out of Black Cat Music Shop for a couple years. I have worked with The Granary and done plenty of charity shows which I am very happy that I was a part of. I enjoy teaching because it also helps me learn how to adjust and help someone overcome small musical obstacles.
My experience in teaching has been a very different ride than most. I was asked by Black Cat Music Shop if I would be interested in teaching and at first I was scared and didn't think I was ready. After having a hand full of students and seeing them progress faster than I thought they would I got excited for them. I then began more and more classes. I started teaching short 30min classes and 60min classes. I structured them differently for each kind of student. My students ranged from beginner children to beginner adults.
For anyone beginning I make my lessons fun because you have to love music to keep wanting to learn. In person lessons I let them play with my studio equipment my guitars and see what style they like or what sounds they enjoy. Then throw in some chords, some notes or a small scale. Whatever makes music fun is what I will start with. Once my student has a good grasp and is hooked then we work hard on techniques, speed and rhythm. A method of mine is also teaching how to write songs as my student learns their chords and scales to keep things as fun as possible.
Keeping music simple and keep the basics. After I see improvements and memorizing scales, chords or the last lesson we will move to the next lesson. Perfection comes with practice and enjoying playing your instrument. For my in person courses I do like to offer some recording time to show feedback to show my student how far they have come. It also lets them hear for themselves as a critique. I try my best to ensure my students get as much as they can from me without overwhelming them with to much information.
