AA, Austin Community College, Music
I've been playing music for most of my life. Growing up my whole family would all gather around the piano while my father played. Seeing how inspiring and influential music could be at a young age helped me to develop a passion for it. I am very grateful to share my passion with others through teaching. I specialize in teaching improvisational styles, such as blues, jazz, and funk. I work with my students to create a good balance of a strong technical foundation and creative jamming skills which builds both the intellectual and intuitive sides of music, and helps them become well-rounded musicians.
I began teaching piano 4 years ago, I had not originally intended on teaching, but I had several people inquire about lessons, since they had seen me perform. I began to pick up more and more students, and I realized that I am actually very passionate about teaching, and sharing all of the knowledge that I acquired over the years. I encourage my students to be creative and write there own music as well as learning traditional and contemporary pieces to even out their repertoire. I'm always open to new students who want to not only learn how to play, but also how to write, play, perform, and improvise in multiple styles.
I give all of my students a mixture of technical exercises, repertoire pieces, and creative assignments to keep things interesting and varied. We will spend about half of the lesson on technique and theory, and the other half on understanding, and appreciating different musical styles and how to improvise comfortably and confidently over them. I have a much heavier focus on songwriting, and composing than most teachers, and I encourage my students to be as creative as possible while giving them the tools to do so effectively and correctly.
My teaching style is overall fairly laid back. I let my students set the pace, but I also expect them to be passionate, curious, and hard-working. I love to encourage students as they explore different areas of their playing, and try different ideas. I push my students just out of their comfort zone, and force them to take risks. I encourage musical open mindedness, which means I truly think that there is value in all different styles of music. Anything from Classical to Hip-Hop, or Reggae to Indie etc. I firmly believe that in order to create and play great music you have to first be able to truly listen to and appreciate music of all genres.
