I am an awarding-winning singer of classical South Indian (Carnatic) music. I began my training at age 8 and had begun singing in the South Indian music circuit by age 13. Just a few years later I had given invited solo concerts at a number of historic venues across the region. Since then, my experience as a classical Indian singer has been bolstered by an active performance career that included several cities in South Africa and the United States. I received The Brinda Repertory Centenary award in 2015 for my work in Carnatic music. While I was a graduate student at Columbia University, I had the chance to collaborate with and learn from some of the amazing talent the New York City has to offer. I found herself thriving in this nexus of different musical styles, ranging from classical South Indian to out-and-out rock. In recent summers I've worked and performed with different bands here in the city. I have performed across the northeastern region of the United States and in India. Staying true to my roots, she spends the Carnatic music season performing back in India. My passion for music and singing led me to New York Vocal Coaching where I received an advanced teacher training certification. I am excited to share what she has learned with students, in India, the United States, and thanks to modern technology, all across the world. I truly believe that, with the right vocal technique, encouragement and a positive attitude everyone can sing! I am passionate about the voice and would love to help you reach all of your singing goals!
I began teaching 5 years ago. I started teaching classical Indian music and expanded into teaching vocal technique in various genres from Bollywood to western classical. My focus is to make sure your voice is functioning to the best of its ability in students of all ages in any genre. I like to facilitate a friendly, warm and encouraging environment where the student feels free to make mistakes and try new and different sounds thereby finding their unique voice. With the right technique and encouraging learning environment I believe every singer can reach their singing goals.
I teach vocal technique to students of all ages and genres. For beginner students I work on each of their registers (chest voice, head voice, mix and flageolet) emphasising range and flexibility to begin with and then adding strength work as we progress. The student and I will choose repertoire appropriate to their level while still posing a challenge to apply their newly learned technique in the context of singing a song. With advanced students I work with their singing goals and tailor the lessons to their specific needs. Do you need to be stronger in your mix? Do you want to learn how to belt? Do you need to improve your range? We can do it all and more together!
My passion for singing had easily translated into my passion for teaching singing. When a student has their "a-ha" moment as they figure out a solution to something they've been grappling with vocally, there is nothing more joyful. I work closely with the student to understand their goals and achieve them each class. I believe in an encouraging and safe learning environment. I am a persistent coach and I will ensure that the student is satisfied with their achievement I each and every class. I truly do work on the premise that everyone can sing!
