I’m a positive instructor who thoroughly loves working with students, helping them meet their goals, and enabling them to enjoy music for the rest of their lives! I have a Masters in clarinet performance from Indiana University, but also hold a Bachelors in music education with a current K-12 instrumental teaching license. I’ve been blessed to perform all over the United States, at Carnegie Hall, and in 5 other countries with orchestras, bands, and a drum & bugle corps. My variety of performing experiences greatly influences my teaching.
I’ve been teaching in some capacity for over 7 years. Currently, I teach private clarinet lessons full time to over 50 wonderful students. Also, I lead sectionals at several area schools and work with the nationally ranked Avon High School marching band. I encourage students to set their own specific goals to work towards. Above all, I aim to make lessons fun and positive so students enjoy learning and playing their instrument! It’s important for students to play a variety of music, including music they know for them to stay motivated. I’m always willing to bring on new students of all ages!
I cater my teaching and methods to each individual student and his/her needs and goals. For beginners, I often use Hal Leonard’s Essential Elements. After progressing past that, the Rubank books and Hite etudes work for many students. Starting around 8th grade, I introduce solo repertoire appropriate to their level. During lessons, I always have students work on some form of scale, sight-reading, and ear training. I have several duet books (and a Disney book!) that students love to sight-read from. I always ask what goals the student has, so I know what skills or pieces we should focus on.
Every lesson I give is different, depending on how the student learns and how they’re motivated. My teaching style is energetic and positive, yet with realistically high standards. I truthfully love giving lessons, and students sense this. Positive feedback is always given before negative. I help students set specific, attainable goals so they can progress at their own pace. Also, I find out what other interests/hobbies the student has so I can make interdisciplinary musical connections. I always teach students HOW to practice, so they’re making the most of their time.
I took clarinet lessons with Sarah throughout high school from 2018-2022. As this ranges during the pandemic, we did them both in person and online, and in either scenario Sarah was completely dedicated, communicative, effective, and kind. Sarah fosters a positive judgement free environment that encourages growth in the best way possible. She adapts her methods based on the needs of her students, and her extensive knowledge about her instruments gives her the ability to give helpful guidance to players of all levels. Over four years, she was just what I needed at every stage, while having expectations for me that kept me accountable for meeting a certain standard of excellence. She was even instrumental in my college audition process. You can tell that Sarah loves what she does and that she is truly invested in you as a person, you can’t do much better when it comes to a lessons teacher.
