Bachelor Degree: Iowa State University
I love teaching music! It truly is a passion and way of life. My teaching style is hands-on and FUN! I work well with students of all ages and skill levels. I have taught in public schools, as well as, in private studios for more than a decade. I graduated from Iowa State University in 2009 with a BA in Music Education. I am a licensed music teacher in the state of Iowa. I have performed with many orchestras and bands in the state of Iowa including the Fort Dodge Area Symphony, Karl L. King Municipal Band, and the Sioux City ROCKESTRA! My performance career has spanned over 20 years.
My teaching experience began in middle school, I would help my friends learn how to play music so we could perform in school talent shows. During high school and college I began teaching more professionally in a studio setting. Whether it was piano, french horn, or the ukulele, I was able to find a way to connect with my students. This ability to connect with my students has really helped me when I taught middle school band. I loved choosing fun, interesting, and relatable music for my students to learn! With my private studio students I'm always on the lookout for songs or music that would make learning the instrument (or the music) more fun. I am a firm believer that music should not be a chore to learn, it should be FUN!
The most important parts of learning any instrument is reading music and posture/hand positions. On piano I typically use Faber's Piano Adventure series. I've found that this series teaches the fundamentals in a fun and easy way. On brass and woodwind instruments I would start a beginner with the Standard of Excellence series and supplement with the Rubank method books. With ukulele I like to start with Hal Leonard method books and then shift to Johnson's Ukulele Aerobics. On every instrument I never stop with just the method books. That's not fun....I have loads of fun and "cool" supplemental materials to incorporate into our lessons.
My teaching style is positive, encouraging, demonstrative, and (I may have mentioned it before) FUN! Every teacher is looking for the "light bulb" moment. The moment the content really clicks with a student. It always turns on at different moments with each student. I love encouraging my students to never give up. I know what it is like to have a teacher who doesn't care about their student. That will never be the case for me! I work extremely hard to ensure my students' success and enjoyment in what they are working on. I think it is important to perform as well. The experience of getting up in front of a group of family and friends to show off you amazing skills is invaluable. It is a skill that you will carry with you for your entire life.
