I am a creative and enthusiastic teacher who believes in innovative teaching methods to help students of all ages and backgrounds reach their full potential. Every student has an ability to learn, and I am passionate about harnessing the innate skills in each child. I have played piano since the age of eight and grew up accompanying various choirs, playing in church, and performing in contests. In college, I discovered that my passion lies in teaching piano, so I have spent the past several years discovering various opportunities to harness and focus my gift.
I began teaching piano my sophomore year of college. During my college career, I built up a studio of nearly 20 students, tutored college-level piano courses, and worked as a Teacher's Assistant in Sight Singing and Aural Training. Since then, I taught for two years at a Summer Music Conservatory in Texas, led week-long keyboard intensive seminars throughout Western Kenya, and most recently, taught at the nation's largest piano conservatory. I believe that lessons should be fun, fast-paced, and stimulate the whole child through a wide variety of songs and genres. These are not your grandmother's lessons!
Most of my students use Alfred's Piano Course. After just a few lessons, we add in additional books and songs to expose the student to as much music as possible. I believe that the more music a student is exposed to, the better a musician he or she becomes. With the exception of recital pieces, I rarely spend more than a few weeks on one song, but instead focus on guiding students to play a wide variety of music at their level. Piano lessons should be engaging and exciting, no matter a student's level!
I am not a passive bystander at lessons; I jump right into the music and guide students on how to best read and play each song. A theory-centered approach to piano is very important. When your child takes lessons, he or she won't merely learn how to play piano, but how to understand and love all music. Every child is capable of learning how to play piano and of being proud of what they have accomplished. My job is to harness the innate ability hidden within each student, and help them accomplish reasonable goals to inspire a lifetime of music.
