I have privately taught students from ages five to 56. Since I recently came out of college, I have about one year of experience teaching students part time. I also have experience teaching groups of elementary school students the violin. I encourage students to practice a certain number of hours every day according to his or her playing level. My students are encouraged to enter recitals and competitions so they can feel more accomplished and motivated to learn. I will ask intermediate and advanced students about their aspirations related to the violin so I can decide which competitions that student should participate in.
For beginner students who are children, I usually start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals, I will introduce solo repertoire suited for his or her first recital performance. I introduce etudes to the students after the student demonstrates the ability to play several simple pieces well. For intermediate and advanced students, I typically do not let them play a piece at a certain grade level until they have finished playing one piece one grade level below that. For adult students, I try to discover what he or she is interested in and guide my instruction accordingly, no matter what his or her ability level is.
I think it is important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I try to set goals for my students which match with the student's learning pace at each lesson. Additionally, by trying to find out what inspires the student, I can tailor my instruction to their wants and needs successfully. One way I try to find out what inspires the student by asking what pieces interest them. I am willing to teach pieces that are requested to be taught if I think that it matches the student's playing level.
