ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

I hold a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Augusta State University (2003). I have almost 20 years of teaching/coaching experience.

Awards:

2003- Lucie Ruzicka Musical Theatre Award, Augusta State University

Overview:
I am a violinist and string teacher originally from Augusta, Georgia. I've lived in Atlanta, Ga and Chattanooga, TN, and currently reside in Pittsburgh, Pa. As far back as I can remember, music has always been a huge part of my life, starting with my first exposure to music through records and the radio. I asked for violin lessons at age nine and never looked back. By the end of high school, had picked up the viola as well and even worked through a couple of flute method books. My life is unimaginable to me without music. As a music major, I began performing and gigging. I discovered that I enjoyed playing not only classical music, but musicals, pop, and rock as well. Nearer to graduation, I began teaching privately, eventually becoming a full-time public school orchestra teacher in Augusta. I moved to Pittsburgh in 2011, where I happily continue my career as a string/voice/keys teacher, and performer primarily on voice, violin, and cello with Midnight Vinyl Duet.
EXPERIENCE
I began coaching younger string students before I was even out of high school and taught my first private violin lessons while I was finishing my degree. After college, I played the violin with a Beatles Tribute Band called Number 9 and I also regularly played on violin and viola in the pit orchestra for the Augusta Players, Augusta's premier professional theatre company. I taught for seven years in the Richmond County Public Schools, two as a choral director, and five of which were with the Orchestra Program. I've also taught privately and coached ensembles for the last decade in several programs. Since my move to Pittsburgh, I have performed with the Eclectic Laboratory Chamber Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Savoyards, the Pittsburgh Philharmonic, and the String Ensemble of the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Tuesday Musical Club. I am currently pursuing performances with a guitarist. We are Midnight Vinyl Duet and play everything from Classical to 60s/70s music. Check us out on YouTube! METHODS USED
I primarily use the Essential Elements String Method or Piano Adventures books to start beginners on violin, viola, cello, and piano, with a focus on note reading and scales, as well as playing by ear. If you have started on a different method book, I am happy to keep you on track with your progress. I am classically trained, but as you can see, I enjoy playing classical, musical theatre, post-modern, and rock 'n' roll, so I encourage learning the basics and quickly incorporating the music YOU want to play, as you develop your technique.   In teaching voice, I am sensitive to the delicate nature of young voices and teach total musicianship, including tonal memory, scales, sight-reading, and repertoire. I highly encourage students to sing music they love and feel a real connection to; any style or genre is fair game! Voice students who play an instrument (guitar or piano, for example) are welcome to do so during the voice lesson, if you wish. I love helping you combine your musical passions!!!
LESSON STYLE
Having a classical background will prepare you for any type of music you'd like to play down the road, so I believe in teaching the basics first and then encouraging my students to branch out, according to their own interests. I take an individual approach to each student and each lesson. Every time I see you, we'll review and then take a step forward. I strongly believe in going at the right pace for YOU. The only comparison I ever encourage my students to make is the comparison between themselves this week versus last week or a year ago. Music is about seeing your focus and hard work pay off. If you're not having fun, I'm not having fun! Let's make music and have a good time together!

Sarah always makes efficient use of the time she has in each lesson, and ensures that the goals for the practice days until the next lesson are very clear. Very knowledgeable, and very easy to get along with.

Sarah is an amazing instructor, to say the least and goes well above and beyond what is expected of her. I have seen students of hers become so much more passionate about music than they originally were and change career paths from other careers to that of music. She sparks interest and love for music and also has a vast variety of musical talent under her belt. She is the whole package!

Sarah is an incredible teacher. She helped me so much when I was in high school trying to become a more advanced violinist. She helped me achieve my goals, and I am now a music educator myself. She is such a kind and friendly person, and she does well with so many age groups! I highly recommend her for lessons.

All three years of middle school Sarah taught me viola and cello. Without Sarah’s help I wouldn’t have been able to compete in orchestra competitions in high school. She is compassionate about her work, her students, and the music. I highly recommend her!

Sarah has a vast knowledge of string instruments. I was hesitant about learning viola, but she was nothing but encouraging and positive. Lessons have been productive and an efficient use of my time. I couldn't believe how much I’d progressed after just a few weeks! I really appreciate that she allows the lesson to build upon my prior knowledge and doesn’t waste my time with drilling certain exercises unless they are warranted. Listens to my concerns and gives me confidence and ownership of my abilities. When I wanted to play a simple duet with her she encouraged me and made it happen! She is also flexible if I need to change a lesson time, allowing for the occasional rescheduling. Wonderful educator. Highly recommended.

As an educator, observing Sarah working with children was inspiring. She's knowledgable, engaging, and patient. I've seen her with both shy and outgoing students and can attest that she is great at playing to the strengths of each child. Her love of music and ability to make concepts relatable is beyond impressive. I can't recommend her enough!

Sarah has a very great way of bringing music to the student in such a way that it is attainable. Her methods are tailored to individual students and she is incredibly supportive, giving above and beyond your average teacher. Sarah is efficient and clear, and an absolute joy to work with.

Sarah has two passions - music and building relationships with people. She brings those two things together in teaching music lessons. You can't go wrong with her!

Sarah was my late elementary school viola teacher. She was the one who first sparked a love for my instrument, and I probably would not still be playing without having learned from her. She is great with teaching both technique and musicality, and people with all different styles of learning and personalities. She will work with you wherever you're at, and I would highly recommend her.
