I am an open-minded and energentic teacher that will do whatever it takes to help my students learn the piano! Playing the piano is one of the biggest joys of my life, and I love to share that with as many people as possible. I gradauted in 2011 from Hyles-Anderson College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education with a minor in Piano Pedagogy. I had the opportunity to play with choirs and orchestras throughout college, and have continued learning and loving the piano. My studio is relatively new and growing steadily!
EXPERIENCE
I started teaching in high school and fell in love with it. After college I moved around a bit and spent time developing playing by ear. Now I am settled and loving teaching! I really strive to develop a fun relationship with my students (especially the younger ones) because nobody is going to practice if they aren't having a good time at the lesson! Lessons with me are stress free and full of laughs and scales. I also ask my students their favorite songs, and find them on their level. It is amazing how much more they will practice if they like the song! And if you are thinking that I live my life with "Let It Go" stuck in my head, then you are absolutely right. That isn't to say that classical music isn't a big part of the lessons though.
METHODS USED
I have three different sets of books for new students that are children; so if you have more than one starting lessons, you can hear different songs. I typically use Piano Adventures, Bastien, or Alfred, although Piano Adventures is my favorite. I suggest the lesson book, theory book and technique books be used simultaneously to give the student the most well-rounded lesson. For adults or even teenagers, I like to learn about what interests them musically and work towards that style or song. Alfred's book for adult learners, provides a great foundation and upon completion; we can focus solely on the music they want to play. Also with older beginners, I find spending some time focusing solely on theory will jumpstart their playing especially sight reading.
LESSON STYLE
I think my approach to teaching piano is highly individualized. What motivates one student will not necessarily motivate another. Brief example: I currently have a student who likes to give me really "hard" high-fives after he has accomplished something. While he is adorable and he will work really hard to give me that high-five; this wouldn't work on many other students. Whatever will inspire my student to practice is what I will provide whether that is praise or stickers. I also like to get to know what the student does during practice time by themselves in order to make that time as valuable as possible. I give detailed instructions( i.e. play this scale 3x with your right hand 5 days this week) on how and what to practice at home, so both the student and I can see great progress.
