BME, Indiana State University, Music Education
I'm a passionate and creative instructor who loves working with students of all ages and sharing my love of music. I graduated in 2012 from Indiana State University with Bachelor degree in Music Education. My primary instrument is the flute. I've played the flute for 14 years in various ensembles throughout the years. I've had great opportunities to work with children throughout my college years as well as beyond those years. I've had the opportunity to teach a week-long music camp, as well as bring a music supplement to YMCA after school and summer programs. Currently I'm teaching Elementary Music between 3 schools.
My teaching experience began about 2 years ago as I started teaching private lessons part time. I started out with beginning piano lessons in my home studio. For the past 9-10 months I have built up my studio more and increased my number of piano students. I encourage regular practice and include incentives for extra practice. While I do focus on the playing the instrument first and focusing on the subject at hand, I do switch up the activities. I find that including different music games to reinforce what the students know help to learn more about the music and create a happier atmosphere for the lessons. I'm looking forward to bringing on new flute students of all ages! I now have been teaching K-5 music at 3 different elementary schools as well.
For any level of flute students I use the Rubank Method books. These books come in varying levels. I would assess what the student plays and knows and then figure out which book would best fit the student's abilities. As the student progresses, I will begin to search for supplemental books or repertoire based on the student's interests. In school, I like to mix it up with a variety of genres and styles to try to teach the students a better appreciation for a variety of music. I will apply a lot of what I do at school in the studio.
I try to learn quickly how my students learn best and then work with that to help them learn the material. With that I am more prepared to work with them and help set realistic goals for each lesson. I hope that through lessons I help them develop a passion for music as well as playing their instrument. I am always asking the student how they feel about the songs they play, what they want to learn, and making sure they are grasping the material so that I can encourage further learning with my students.
