Hello! I'm a recent graduate from Lawrence University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Instrumental/Choral/General Education finishing up my student teaching. My primary instrument's are bassoon and voice with guitar, ukulele and piano as secondaries but I have a deep love for learning new instruments and have gained intermediate proficiency in all western orchestral/concert band winds, strings and percussion with an emphasis in woodwinds, low brass and marching/concert percussion. I'm a huge music theory and composition person and would love to work with students interested in theory and song writing. I love working with all styles with a vocal focus in musical theater, classical, jazz, and contemporary (pop, indie, folk etc..) and an instrumental focus in classical, contemporary (rock, punk, metal, indie, folk etc..) and music from all over the world. Truly I don't have any one style, I love performing and teaching all kinds of music!
I've been teaching from as early as middle school. I had my first two bassoon students in middle school. Throughout high school I was a teachers assistant to my band and choir directors and frequently led sectionals, class activities or solo lessons. This early teaching experience is what led me to the path of getting my degree and license in music education. Throughout college I had a handful of consistent voice/instrumental students I taught. I'm extremely excited to get to teach musicians of varying backgrounds and skill levels with different styles. I'm willing to work with everyone from the casual musician hoping to just have some fun with music to musicians hoping to perform, compose or seek any career in music.
For beginning students that are k-12 I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements to align with the public school music curriculum. For those 18+ or hoping to learn an instrument outside of school purposes I highly encourage students to pick out their own repertoire to learn however I'm more than happy to help with the process of choosing music. For those with a base line understanding of music we will still read from various methods books and play some standard repertoire but it will not be the focus of lessons. At all ages I truly just want my students to have fun and feel as though they're getting the most out of their education. While I try to align my private teaching as best as possible with what you would get in a K12 private lesson environment, as many or few adjustments can be made for the benefit of the students improvement or ability to have fun learning.
While I try to follow a mostly K12 standard structure to my private lessons at the end of the day I will be tailoring my instruction to my students wants and needs. I like to set attainable weekly goals with my students in regards to technique and style that will be implemented via exercises, scales and into our repertoire. I will work with all students to create a consistent and thoughtful practice schedule and routine to best fit students individual schedules and musical goals. I encourage but do not require students to have a practice journal, I will keep a practice journal for all students that they are free to ask me for digital copies of. Lessons will likely all start with the same structure of warm-up via scales or exercises, musicality and music literacy work in short excerpts or exercises and transition into repertoire.
