I have my own piano studio for 5 years before I relocated to Colorado. I had more than 20 students at one year before Covid. After covid, I added video class to my studio. I am passionate about instilling the love of piano in kids. I wish that everyone can play piano, with practice and determination. I learned to play piano through the Royal School of Music. I gear toward ear training and finger exercises. My focus is on Classical music, sight reading, scales and finger exercises, but I can also teach basic chords.
I had my own piano studio for 5 years and I used to hold annual recital. I took a break of teaching due to relocation. I am passionate about teaching kids piano (mostly classical and a little pops) to keep them engaged. I do request consistent practice of more than 30 minutes a week for young students. It help to establish routine for them to be successful later in piano. If a students need more help, I do recommend a longer lesson (45 minutes) or twice a week lesson. I also teach music theory from time to time as part of the lesson plan. I want my students to develop a love of music and be able to play the songs they really like.
I typical use Alfred's, Piano Adventures or Bastien's Piano Basics for children and I emphasis doing scales/finger exercises. I also encourage ear training. For Intermediate students, I use Bach, Burmuller, and Sonatas. Though I would love to follow books to make sure no fundamental skills/knowledge will be missed, from time to time, I would love to keep students motivated by letting them to pick a song they want to learn (no matter their levels are) and we will be working on that song. This is like a bonus.
My teaching style is instill the love of music in students. I do want my students to grow up and still playing piano because they love to play, not because their parents forced them to play. I want them love piano from the bottom of their hearts. In order to achieve that, I adjust the material according to the student's progresses. I do not mind skipping levels if the student has demonstrated previous knowledge or skills to go to a more advanced level. I also do not mind to focus on one song if there is a song a student really wants to learn.
