Stella Boyle Smith Music Scholarship- 2013-2017
I'm a passionate and laid-back instructor who loves working with students of all ages and sharing my love for music. In 2017, I graduated from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas in Piano Performance. I began studying piano at the age of 3 and I currently work as a Piano Teacher in the Northwest Arkansas area. I'm also a freelance accompanist and choir director in the area as well. Prior to studying music at the University of Arkansas, I graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering and worked as a corporate Supply Chain Management specialist in various roles.
My teaching experience dates back to my teenage years when I began to teach private lessons. I currently work as a piano teacher for the University of Arkansas and Stephanie's Musique Studio. My teaching style is very laid back however I believe that my students should be constantly challenged to progress further in the instrument. I enjoy teaching students of all ages and I tailor my teaching approach and style according to the student's needs. I prefer that my students play a mix of classical and modern music because I believe it's important to study and play various styles of music. Music theory is incorporated into the lessons and technique exercises are to students to increase finger dexterity and promote finger independence. Students are encouraged to participate in recitals and other events and also have the opportunity to participate in group piano pieces if interested.
For beginning students who are children, I use a variety of methods based on the personality and interests of the student. The first lesson is used to get to know the student and their interests. After this first lesson, I have a much better idea of what particular piano method series will work best for that student. I believe that all piano methods have their individual strengths and weaknesses and I try to pick the piano method that will work best for each student. Solo repertoire is given to each student and although I encourage all students to participate in recitals, however it is not required.
I understand that my students lead busy lives and due to this, everyone progresses at their own pace. I encourage students to study at a pace that is comfortable for them however I believe that it is a teacher's responsibility to expose and push students beyond what they may feel comfortable with. Each week, my students are given realistic goals that will help them keep progressing each lesson. Being able to track the progress of my students is important because it's important to me that my students continue to improve each week. The number of assignments given are tailored to each student's learning style and progress.
