Most of my awards I received while on active duty in the United States Navy.
Music has always help a special place in my heart. I have been playing music since I was 6 years old. My mother is also a piano teacher. I was a traveling musician for many years playing with bands all over the country. I am currently attending the Spokane Falls Community College and am enrolled in their Audio Engineering program. I was in the United States Navy for 5 years. During that time I had a band put together so while we were in different ports all over the world we could play music for people That was one of the most thrilling things I have every had the pleasure of experiencing.
I have been teaching music for almost 16 years. Since I graduated high I have always had people who wanted me to teach them how to play. When I first started out I learned out to play in the classical style with the guitar and progressed my way through many different styles. I love playing and teaching the piano because it is the best instrument to learn everything on. All of the theory can be much more easily explained using a piano than any other instrument. I am always encouraging my students to have fun with what they are doing. That, of course, is the most important part of playing music.
With beginner students I always start slow so that I can determine how they best learn. I customize my lessons for each student I am working with. Everyone learns a little bit different and at a different pace. One thing I have learned is that it is not a race. Take your time and let is all sink in. I do focus on site reading and a little bit of ear training. I also incorporate all of the relative theory at the level at which are are studying. I want all of my students to not only know how to play, but why it is done and why it works the way s does. I am a full emersion teacher.
I absolutely love the expression on my students faces when something really click and they understand what I am showing them. For every student we sit down and set goals on what they want to learn. This is a great way to help you see your own progress. Now for every student I always have our "hard music". This is usually a piece a slightly higher in level and ability that we slowly work on throughout the lessons. This allows the students to see some of the newer things they are learning about and have a chance to tackle something new. Challenging ones self is very important and is always rewarding.
