I am an experienced and engaging music educator who loves sharing my skills and talents and inspiring my students. I commit personal resources and expertise to ensure each student has the opportunity to thrive and realize their maximum potential. In 2001, I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and I am a Board Certified Music Therapist. Additionally, I am a published author/composer of an original academic-based music program called Music, Math & Money, and the creator of Staff Saver and Tab Saver: perforated carbonless music manuscript, tablature, and chord chart copy paper.
I am a well rounded and accomplished musician, and able to demonstrate advanced proficiency in music theory, composition and performance. My professional teaching experience dates back to 2002 and I have been fortunate to have been a full time music educator and private music lesson instructor since then. Additionally, I have years of experience providing live solo music in restaurants, bars, hotels, and for private parties and community events.I also enjoy incorporating digital music recording and media file sharing technology whenever possible in order to record original songs, document lessons progress, and to provide practice tracks for home use.
In general, I aim to incorporate age/skill appropriate elements of formal note reading, songs of interest, and improvisation into each lesson. I have found that this combination can go a long way in helping students enjoy the overall experience, and motivate them to practice so they will continue to learn/build their skills and enjoyment. When I have discovered what my students are interested in and what truly motivates them, I can guide my instruction accordingly. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. Beyond that, my students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn.
I believe that effective instruction has a “rhythm” of its own that takes place as a result of the alternation of doing and thinking, and that good teaching of anything begins with what the students already know, or have the ability to do, and ends with what we want them to know, or be able to do. One of my favorite things about teaching is finding ways for my students to learn without them realizing it, and being able to connect the content to my students in meaningful ways. When students are able to communicate what they are doing, as well as what they are learning, they are better prepared to be self-directed learners, and independent leaders throughout their lives.
