I have worked as a professional musician for over 25 years. I have performed with members of the Doobie Brothers, Grateful Dead, David Grisman Quintet, Galactic and many others. I have performed on guitar, bass, drums, mandolin and keyboards. I have performed across the country at festivals, theaters and smaller venues like cafes and restaurants. I also have 20+ years experience in the music "business," as radio deejay, music journalist for the New York Times, manager of a guitar store, sales rep for a drum manufacturer, and guitar instructor UCSC.
I have been teaching for over 20 years. I have been teaching a guitar class at UCSC for 8 years. I have also taught group classes through the City of Santa Cruz Parks & Rec Department and at Cypress High School. I have also given private lessons on guitar, bass, mandolin, drums and piano.
I have also been a guest lecturer at two music classes at UCSC (Music Business and Music of the Grateful Dead).
I like to use familiar songs as vehicles to teach. In my UCSC class, I start with Beatles songs because everyone knows them and they're well-liked. I always like students to suggest songs they want to learn as well, since they will be more likely to practice and be more engaged in practice if the song is something they enjoy. I use these as vehicles to teach chord voicings, theory, intervals and technique.
I do not use notation but prefer guitar-centric language such as chord charts and tablature.
My students generally comment that I am patient. I try to go at the right speed for the student, pushing them where it works but slowing down when needed. I'm very methodical and try to break things down to focus on the details so each piece of information is easily digestible and easy to grasp.
