I am an internationally touring guitarist and songwriter based in Philadelphia, PA who is as passionate about teaching as I am about playing. In 2002 I received my BFA from the prestigious conservatory at SUNY Purchase where I studied jazz guitar performance, studio production techniques and songwriting. Since then I have made a name for myself as a full-time guitarist, bandleader and music educator across all music genres with performances throughout North America and abroad. I received my MFA in Music Composition from Vermont College of Fine Arts in 2016. I am currently on faculty at Rowan University in Glassboro New Jersey where I teach Songwriting, Recording, History of Pop Music and Guitar.
I began teaching guitar lessons at the early age of 17, and have continued to make private instruction a mainstay of my professional career ever since. Working with students across all ages and abilities, in my home studio or travelling to them, my passion for teaching has only grown over time. I find no greater delight than seeing the smile on the face of a new student who is getting those first few chords under their fingers, or helping an advanced student tackle a tricky riff or progression. Whatever your level or experience, keeping lessons fun, rewarding and focused on your personal goals is what I'm all about.
I find a balanced approach to studying technique, sight reading, theory and the students favorite songs to be the best recipe for keeping motivated and engaged. Beginning students will use Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method (Book 1) to get into the basics of these elements down, while learning basic voicings of the most common chords that will allow them to dive into playing some of their favorite songs almost immediately. Lessons for more advanced students will be tailored to their individual needs, and can cover anything from improvising, to songwriting to learning complicated solos and advanced guitar techniques.
When studying with me, students can expect a comfortable and fun atmosphere that promotes experimentation and positive reinforcement. Employing a curriculum that is equal parts formal technique and informal playing of the students favorite music, I make every lesson engaging and exciting. After 3 to 6 months, beginners should expect to be able to play many of their favorite songs, have a firm grasp on basic scales, chords, theory and sight reading, and can even begin writing their own songs and improvising solos! If you're already an intermediate/advanced player, I will push you to find your unique voice on the guitar, and tap into advanced techniques and approaches that will help you fully realize all that the guitar has to offer. Lessons are tailored to each individual student's particular interests and abilities. Wherever you want to take your guitar playing, I will get you there and beyond!
