I am an experienced teacher with a wide variety of expertise. Studying the challenging music of jazz and classical in two of the worlds best music schools has given me very advanced musical understandings and skills. I am also an independent singer/songwriter and love to teach theory. Performing in smalls clubs singing and playing guitar, playing upright bass in major NYC clubs like Smoke, or grabbing my electric bass and laying it down - these are my jams. I am currently engaged in learning ALL ABOUT tech from recording to video production.
I started teaching at an internship at PAI of Wyoming Seminary back in 2013. Then I developed my own private studio when studying in Rochester for my Eastman Undergrad. Finally, Hobart and William Smith Colleges hired me before completing that degree to teach at their fantastic school. I have taught jazz, classical, pop, and everything in between. I have no preference for teaching genres, just a focus on making sure the student is learning WHAT THEY WANT. I have coached for competitions and simply helped someone get started in their musical journey.
I love music and it should be fun for everyone. While I can teach the most advanced students, I really enjoy helping beginners and intermediates get started playing whatever music they love. I make sure EVERY student learns MUSIC and not just their instrument so that way they can learn to play by ear, compose, and explain music. I create lesson plans specific to every student so they can accomplish exactly what they want. While there are great books out there for these instruments, I prefer to make my own material specific to the student. I have specific methods for the boring stuff - scale learning etc. BUT as for learning chords, songs, bass lines, how to compose - I make lesson material JUST FOR YOU.
I've taught people in their 70s and as young as 8. My teaching style is simple - lets have fun and make great music. I never want to make people go home feeling overwhelmed or down about the work the have to do. Lets keep it simple and FOCUSED to achieving goals like learning your favorite songs or how to jam with buddies. Keeping it light and attainable is super important from professionals down to beginners - otherwise we all end up burnt out on what could have been our relaxing and beautiful activity.
