My life's work is to spread the joy of learning and playing music and helping all who wish to learn to hone or to obtain the skills needed to do just that. I have successfully done so professionally for the past 20 years. I deeply listen and observe the student's needs and respond to each individual with an approach that best suits their goals and have helped dozens of students of all ages bring out the inner-musician in themselves. I went professional at 18 and continue to compose music, lyrics and produce, record and perform. I attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, Berklee College of Music and the Los Angeles Music Academy.
From learning on the streets to playing on stages to studying music in 3 colleges and working in the record business at Caroline Distribution, MCA, Geffen and Engine/Blackout Records as well as working as a touring stage manager and personal assistant with Peter, Paul and Mary and being the member of dozens of performing/recording bands including my position as a founding member of the Metal Blade recording artist, Gypsyhawk and being listed in the Encyclopedia Metallum and having toured and performed at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts with a theater troupe and my work with soundtracks and original compositions/recordings, I have had and continue to pursue the muse in my widely varied and exciting career in music.
I tailor my methods according to the specific needs of each student. I feel that it is my job to assess the needs and learning style of a student and adapt what I offer to them and do so by deeply listening and observing what a student can do when we first meet to what I can determine are their interests and goals and what styles or approaches most fire up their creative excitement. While I do teach students to read music and teach the theory behind tunes and compositions that we learn, I think that the MOST important element in anyone's pursuit of musical proficiency lay in the ability to connect what one hears to what one plays. Ear training therefore is a large component. I do use the time honored texts by Hal Leonard and Alfred publications or some from Mel Bay and those from Jay Traylor as well as many others such as the Real Book and Greg Fishman texts.
The moment that I can connect a student with this body of knowledge is nothing short of magical. I will never tire of that pursuit and when that is reached, it is a reward beyond words. I know that with my 20+ years of successful instruction in this field that I have helped hundreds of people achieve their musical goals and to find the joy in accomplishing this. I am a personable and empathetic instructor who values the student's perspective that I must adopt to access the material at hand and to help them to absorb what is studied with patience and an element of play and fun.
