BA in Music Performance (Jazz and Classical Guitar) - University of Wisconsin Milwaukee
I have been a musician for over 35 years, and I have been teaching for most of that time. In addition to my teaching work I have been in various live bands, studio performances, and theater work. I've performed prog rock for large crowds, big band swing on New Years Eve, and recorded for Hal Leonard instructional books. I have a BA in Jazz and Classical guitar, though I started out playing rock and metal. My greatest passion in music is the creativity it allows me, and I try to share that with my students, and bring out their own creativity.
I began teaching in high school, helping my fellow guitar players and others in band and jazz band. I continued off and on through college, and became a full time private lesson teacher not long after graduating. I taught full time for about ten years and then moved into working with music publishers and music notation projects. I returned to teaching part time in 2016, both online and in person. I teach beginner to advanced students. I teach many styles of music and I also teach recording and music production techniques, composition and songwriting, and coach live performance and project work. I also currently teach part time at a public school in Oregon, teaching guitar, piano, ukulele, and percussion.
For my youngest students I start with a method book as I think the structure and step by step progress are very helpful. For teens and adults book recommendations are based on each students needs. I let the students guide me with the kinds of music they will really enjoy playing, but I will use the music they like to teach theory, song writing, and other aspects of music. My students don't just learn how to play songs, they learn why music works through the songs they like. I'm also an advocate for good technique and body awareness. There are many ways to approach an instrument, but it's important to think about the physical aspects of playing. I make sure we aren't inviting injury, stress, or unnecessary fatigue. We also go through a process of creating a practice routine and discuss good practice habits.
I want to help my students set goals, both large and small, and help them understand the step by step process to get there. I also emphasize understand why you are playing something. Students often get frustrated with beginner songs or simple (aka boring) exercises. I make a point to explain that we're learning how to learn. It's probably not that essential that you know how to play Red River Valley, but it is important that you go through the process of learning. My intention is to set up my students for lifelong success so they can continue their love of music long after they leave my studio.
