I'm a seasoned musician that is very motivated to share my knowledge with eager students. I focus mainly on cultivating musicianship as a whole instead of focusing on a single facet. I've been in a wide range of musical projects - choirs, a Capella groups, folk bands, rock bands, etc - and I assumed a leadership role in every single one. I've worked with an age range from 5 to 50 - no one is too young or old to appreciate the joy of performing music. With me as an instructor you will not only understand your instrument, you will also understand how music works.
My teaching experience began when I was young. My mom is a teacher, so I was inherently interested in it. I used to be the best English tutor in my 3rd grade class. I didn't start my music career until I got into high school, but I was immediately excited to share what I was learning with my friends. From there, I found work teaching guitar lessons at a local elementary school. The kid's hands were barely big enough to hold a G chord - but they had so much excitement. From college to now I've focused more on my career as a professional musician, but I'm very excited to be teaching again.
If a student comes in knowing absolutely nothing about music, I will start with teaching basic music theory. Extensive knowledge of music theory is not essential, but a basic grasp will make the learning process much smoother. From there - for stringed instruments - we'll move onto hand conditioning. Musicians use muscles that everyday people do not (also, playing guitar hurts until you fingers calluses). Then, we move onto chord shapes and eventually we'll learn full songs. After that point it really depends on how the student would like to continue.
I thrive off of my passion for music, and the same goes for my teaching style. I will take you through every turn of learning your instrument, but the responsibility and the style of learning ultimately relies on how the student will best receive the information. I learned music completely different than the way my best friend and band partner learned how to play - and they were both viable methods. As long as it gets you where you need to go musically - whether that be strumming a banjo on your porch or rocking a guitar solo in front of your adoring fans - I will assume any teaching style necessary.
