Hello. Sean O., here. I have been playing professionally for almost twenty years and am excited to be sharing my skills and knowledge, once again. I attended Kinder High School for Performing and Visual Arts, where I studied Jazz bass and music theory. My musical repertoire ranges from hardcore punk and metal, to pop, soul, reggae and blues. Playing consistently has also taken me across the country on tour and into some incredibly varied live venues. I am a husband and a father, which has further fostered my want to share my abilities with others and I hope I can share, just a bit of it with you.
I began teaching privately about ten years ago. This occurred rather organically by having conversations with people in which they expressed interest in either learning a new instrument, or expanding on their preexisting skills. Though I do have a formal music education, I did start off self-taught, learning songs from my favorite bands and artists. Because of this, I use a combination of assigned songs and songs requested by the student to help build and conceptually realize their facility on their instrument, as well as basic scale and chord theory. I have also found that this method helps to keep students engaged, without the lessons becoming obtrusive.
Regardless of a student's skill level, I utilize my own personal methods and lesson plans when teaching. I find that building a personal plan with each student helps in building and maintaining the student's interest in continuing to learn. for beginners, as well as younger students, I start with showing the student how to hold and get sound from the instrument. I then assign them a single major scale and possibly a simple song to play along with. In the case of working with children, I will discuss specifics with their parents before hand. For more intermediate to advanced students, I like to get a scope of what they want to learn, as well as how far they would like to get with their lessons.
As a rule, I let the student dictate what they would like to learn and where they would like to start. From there, depending on what skill level they are already at, I will choose what aspects of formal training that would help them to best achieve their goals. With beginners, I always pay attention to how they hold and operate the instrument to ensure that they do not develop techniques and habits that could cause them physical injury or significantly hinder their progress down the line. I also look closely at these aspects with more advanced students. With children, I always discuss lesson plans and teaching methods with the parents prior to any lesson. Once these criteria have been assessed, I will then proceed to my aforementioned method of implementing theory and techniques that will directly aid in the student's achievement of their personal goal. My goal is neither to make an individual into a carbon copy of myself as a musician, or even make them into the best, most competent musician. Instead, my goal is to make each person into the musician that they want to be. Music is an art, an outlet, a form of expression. I simply want to provide the tools for that.
