I do request they practice a minimum of 30 minutes per day, 5 days a week. Also, I spend at least an hour preparing for a one hour lesson. At the end of each lesson I critique the progress, and give the student, and its parent a written copy of the critique, as well a written lesson plan for the upcoming week. For beginning students who have never touched music in their lives (mostly children), I start out with the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements book of their chosen instrument. From there, we learn how to read music, play in time, and play the instrument itself. Once the student feels comfortable with the practices in the book, I move on to introduce solo repertoire to prepare for a recital.
