For beginning piano students, I tend to use the Alfred method books 1-3, then graduate to Hanon "the virtuoso pianist" I stress the "fundamentals" while adding solo repertory for enjoyment and solo playing. Simple piano pieces keep the lessons fun for beginners, while classical works are encouraged for intermediate and advanced students. For violin and viola, one of my choices is "All for Strings". I believe the more students play scales and etudes such as Kayser, Wolfhart, Kreutzer,and Suzuki, the better they would become as a musicians in the future.
