For beginning students in flute and piano, I use Trevor Wye flute books and Alfred piano books, respectively. These books cover fundamentals and hand technique and once that is learned and internalized, then I will introduce more solo or accompanied repertoire that they would eventually perform in a recital. For beginning composition students (which are taught remotely on Zoom), I will go over different "lectures" about fundamental music theory and integrate short composition assignments that go according to what was learned in the lesson. As I mentioned before, each student is unique, so I don't teach everyone the same way. Instead, I have a highly flexible teaching style, which allows me to meet a student's individual needs for lessons. I take the time to learn about my students' learning preferences and create new ways to teach material that will make more sense for them. For example: singing a rhythm for an auditory learner, versus patting the rhythm on our legs with a tactile learner, versus drawing visual representations of rhythm for a visual learner. Read More
