For beginning students I usually start with Hal Leonard's beginning guitar. But if they want to just play music, I will als teach them how to read tabs and chord charts. Eventually, the student will progress to scales, soloing, and comping. Read More

When studying with me, students can expect a comfortable and fun atmosphere that promotes experimentation and positive reinforcement. Employing a curriculum that is equal parts formal technique and informal playing of the students favorite music, I make every lesson engaging and exciting. After 3 to 6 months, beginners should expect to be able to play many of their favorite songs, have a firm grasp on basic scales, chords, theory and sight reading, and can even begin writing their own songs and improvising solos! (Basic interval training will be a part of everyone's lesson, as there's really no way around that.) Some students are intimidated by the classical repertoire, and the demands the classical tradition places on musicians. Read More

For beginning students I start by showing them the open strings on the guitar or bass and give them exercises to navigate the pick or their fingers through the the strings. Once the student understands the open strings I'll begin showing them single note lines starting with the low strings and working up to the higher strings. For this I'll use examples from simple rock and pop songs. Once the student begins understanding the fret board, I will introduce chords and scale patterns that are essential to playing the guitar along with building a repertoire of songs that the student can perform.
