I specialize in teaching beginner guitar... even students who have never touched a guitar. I typically begin by teaching a very simple chord progression to a popular rock song, and by changing the strumming pattern, it's 2 songs in 1. By the end of the first lesson, I want the student to be able to play a song, not just random chords, so they can play along to it as practice. Then I assess what style, song, or band the student wants to learn so we can work towards playing material from that group or artist. Read More

My teaching style is very much based in what each individual student wants to learn. I dont see the point of force feeding something that will just make the person no longer want to participate in the wonders of music. Scales are a large part of every good musician so I will attempt to make them fun and useful! Music theory for non majors is what I took in college and it is a much more open and less regimented form of learning the intricacies behind the theory. Read More

To start, I try to find out what the musical interests are from the student and try to cater their lessons in that direction. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More

Classes are customized per the student's individual needs. For some students, this means a standard repertoire: Schradiek, Scevcik, Hrimaly for violin. Hanon for piano. But for others, they would do better with a less formal approach. In all cases, the use of the ear is fundamental and primal. We will learn how to hear, and how to listen for timbres and intervals. (Basic interval training will be a part of everyone's lesson, as there's really no way around that.) Some students are intimidated by the classical repertoire, and the demands the classical tradition places on musicians. Read More
