When taking on beginner students, I typically use a blend of method books and novice musical pieces to begin to build musicianship. With intermediate musicians, I tend to seek out anything of interet to the student while incorporating harder repertoire to strengthen musicianship and to continue to peek interest in music. With adult musicians, I let them guide me to their area of interest, and I capitalize on that to guide them to better musicianship, no matter what their skill level may be. Read More

I was then invited to move back to my college town of Brookings, South Dakota to be their middle school band director. I moved to Sioux Falls and taught in the Catholic School System for a number of years. Whatever instrument private studies we are working on, a balanced approach of performance, literature, theory and technique is studied. Once the groundwork is established, we even work through composition on their chosen instrument. Students work at their own pace. I have some students who move quite swiftly through their levels and that is great. Others may need more time and that is fine. I do find that students who utilize regular and purposeful home practice will tend to get through levels a fair amount quicker. Read More

I studied music education on the saxophone at Stephen F Austin State University and have been the lead of and taught within many different ensembles. I attended the NASA(National American Saxophone Alliance) conference in 2014 in Chicago, IL at Illinois State University School Of Music.
