My teaching methods are completely based on the playing level of the student. Beginner trumpet students will start in any generic beginner trumpet book. Students who have a grasp of the basics will jump right into Arban or Clark studies. I focus on tone improvement, range extension, air control, accuracy, and articulation. Sometimes that just means playing whole notes for 15 minutes at a time! Every embouchure is different so every student needs a different set of studies. Read More

There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a student improve on their instrument. In order to see this growth, a realistic plan of action needs to be employed. I begin by assessing each student's level, as well as their needs and desires, and then form a plan of action to address those needs. If the student has deficiencies in a specific area I usually try to tackle this first, especially if it affects their overall ability to make a good sound, articulate efficiently, or play with ease. The primary trumpet method book I use to teach lessons is "Arban's Complete Conservatory Method for Trumpet" by Jean-Baptiste Arban. Regardless of a student's ability level this book has hundreds of pages of exercises to develop trumpeter skills. The most important thing I develop with beginning students is tone. Once a beautiful sound is developed within a student's repertoire a myriad of other problems go away, and the student learns exponentially faster. Read More

When I'm working with beginning students, my defaul method book is Essential Elements. However, if students have another book for a school band class, I am more then happy to work with them to preserve some line of consistency in the students education. As they progress, I look to find more advanced etude and solo books, focusing on music that is of interest to the student. Practicing music should be fun, and I try to make it fun, while maintaining an emphasis on fundamentals and musicianship. Read More
