When I start with student new to the drums I begin with the drum set. Nobody wants to start with a pad and rudiments; lets face it we want to play the kit because it is fun. I encourage an understanding of music and drum-set/percussion performance by listening/analysis of music andtranscription of different rhythmswith a practical application to the drums/percussion. I use a number of different teaching strategies to tailor-make the learning experience for each student. A few of the many books I use are 'Syncopation for the Modern Drummer' by Ted Reed, Stick Control for the Snare Drummer by George Stone and Teaching Rhythms by Joel Rothman. Read More
