My first teaching was in summer music schools, then as an intermediate classroom teacher and music specialist (bands, choirs, musicals, folk dances, recorder, ukulele, classroom music and theory). I earned my Masters and began teaching university but have always taught privately as well. I work with parents to encourage the student to be self-motivated, so I make lessons fun. Students want to practice because they enjoy the progress they are making and look forward to lessons. Read More

For beginning level students of any age, I will begin lessons by going over basic fundamentals of sheet music reading (notation, connecting the instrument to the literature) and music theory that will aid them in accomplishing homework tasks independently. For experienced students, I will ask the student to demonstrate knowledge and playing to their best ability to obtain a better understanding of where to continue their studies. I will also ask all students what kind of music they are already studying and what else they would like to pick up from there (studying classical contemporary for school band with an interest in starting jazz music, etc.) I will always consider the students age and playing level to appropriately create lesson plans that will ensure growth over time. Every student requires a uniquely tailored teaching style, but also they possess a unique set of strengths and "weaknesses" that will be addressed. I do not believe in the "cookie-cutter" approach to teaching. I believe that fundamentals (scales, tuning exercises, lip slurs, technical excecises) are important as these are the key to unlocking the instrument as a means of self-expression, by eliminitating the infamilarity and oddness of the trombone. That being said, I believe that technique should be approached in the most musical way possible, and I strive to teach technique through actual music. My teachers, as were most successful brass players, were influenced by the legendary tubist of the Chicago Symphony, Arnold Jacobs. Read More

For beginning students who are just picking up the horn, we focus on the very basics on how to make noises on it. Once they understand how it make sounds, we slow work on refining and controlling so we can actually learn to play! Older and more experienced students will learn how to make Music, not just playing the notes on the page. A lot of time goes into understanding musicality, so we will often listen to recordings, play together to find different way to express musical ideas, and take time to really understand and comprehend different music genres. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for playing trumpet. Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More
