If a student comes in knowing absolutely nothing about music, I will start with teaching basic music theory. Extensive knowledge of music theory is not essential, but a basic grasp will make the learning process much smoother. From there - for stringed instruments - we'll move onto hand conditioning. My teaching style is unique because it revolves around having fun with music. I believe that more traditional forms of teaching can be too dull or too urgent, leading to disinterest. Once you become disinterested, you're far more likely to quit - and I don't want you to quit! I tailor a student's curriculum to their musical goals and needs, while making sure that I am instilling the fundamentals needed for pursuing music at the college scholarship level. Often this means scales, chords, arpeggios, music literacy, performance practice and listening skills. To accomplish this, I use standard materials that are often available online and are used by college and University music programs around the world. I have a variety of method books in different styles and from different time periods, and will select, assign, and provide a Method book to a student based on the student's goals. Read More
