I started teaching in band camp the summer after my first year of college and have continuously worked with several schools in KY. I have given lessons to students who are just starting out and high school students preparing for auditions and/other performances. I highly encourage students to start taking lessons as early as possible to establish good habits and break bad ones. Because music and the flute is a constant art of improving, I find it beneficial to record students so they can hear themselves as others do. Having recordings of a student also allows them to remember where they started and where they have grown to. I find that positive reinforcement of all elements of flute playing are essential. My teaching experience actually began in a limited capacity prior to starting college. I was fortunate to receive private flute instruction throughout high school, and as a result, I held roles as a section leader as a high school upperclassman. Upon my college graduation, I entered the workforce, all the while picking up flute students, primarily at a beginner level.
