My methods are unique and effective. First I share with my students the history and culture of the instrument. Then I teach how the instrument works, explaining every detail. I use simple exercises that quickly ingrain a foundation for progression. Next I build confidence by playing along in collaboration, while teaching synchronization and tempo. I have gotten better, ... but to this day, I am always more comfortable when playing by ear or by memory. I today's world, I don't see that as a problem, and I try to not force sightreading on a student who seems to not have an inclination towards that skill. I emphasize that sheetmusic is like the recipe for a great meal ... it is just a piece of paper ... and sheetmusic in not the MUSIC itself, anymore than a recipe is the actual meal. Read More

Because every student has different levels of experiences, aptitudes, and learning styles, my teaching methods vary based on each student. Generally, I work with the student to come up with a set of goals to work towards achieving. I teach the fundamentals of the instrument through learning songs that are of interest to the student. I generally use notation (sheet music) and will use instrument workbooks if it seems appropriate, while focusing mainly on developing the ear through listening. Read More
