During lessons I try to keep a fun but focused atmosphere while having the students play as much as possible.  I also believe modeling on the instrument being taught for the student can be a way for students to understand the goals they are trying to achieve.  With online-format lessons it is important to be clear, animated, and engaging to make the best of the time. I approach teaching in a very relaxed manner. If my students learn in a certain type of way I will differentiate my teaching style to accommodate them. I believe all students can learn and enjoy music, it is just a matter of finding the way that speaks to them the most. I do this by first seeing their experience level, asking where they are hoping to be, setting realistic goals, and by acknowledging their mile stones to keep their motivations high. Read More

For all students we will begin with building the centerpiece of any musician, their tone. We will work on necessary fundamentals to build the students embouchure, as well develop the students technique and skills no matter the level. My saying is to be better than your yesterday. I suit my lessons to the individual needs and goals of the student. For beginners, I typically begin out of a method book, but I also use studies and etudes that I have developed on my own in the course of my teaching career. Throughout the learning process, I engage the student with real music to build listening skills, and teach concepts like tone, phrasing, and expression. I also teach all of my students music theory and listening analysis because I believe this is a neccessary component of a strong musical foundation. Read More
