Singing is a difficult skill to teach. Our instrument is internal and is affected by our emotions, stress level, how much sleep we've had, even what we ate for breakfast! Because of this, I feel it is important to maintain a comfortable environment. I encourage my students to let go of their self-doubt and allow themselves to make mistakes. Although I keep lessons friendly, warm, and encouraging, I expect students to work hard and take their lessons seriously. Read More

For a vocal curriculum, I will teach basic vocal warm ups that will improve range, tone musicality. We will work on breathing exercises and relaxation techniques as well as performance etiquette and acting (the story behind the story) and the expression of the story. In addition to classical vocal techniques, students can decide the genre they want to apply it to, such as pop, musical theater, jazz, country, RB, etc. Read More

My students never cease to surprise me be it deciding that they are going to try out for the musical after all, or telling me they want to be a composer. Every week we have assignments and homework and we set goals for the next class, I find it very helpful to have realistic goals that we can stick to and see growth little by little so my students see real progress and growth. When it comes to jazz, I think learning the basics of the language is key! I like to use Jim Snidero's book "Jazz Conceptions" for many beginner to advanced students to study etudes that will help them internalize the ins and outs of what professionals play in their improvisation. I also encourage students to experiment on their own time on what kind of music they want to play, while also encouraging them to practice material that will propel their musicianship, especially for beginner and intermediate students. My experience goes back to High School when I would give casual tutoring sessions to friends. In college I started teaching lessons in theory and composing/songwriting. I like to encourage students to get on a practicing schedule especially for younger students as it helps them get more interested in the instrument. I like to start with modern pop/rock styles to get the student interested in the instrument then mix in Jazz so we can talk about more complex theory and also mix in a little classical so we can talk about technique and form.
